When Is Fluoride Treatment Needed

Dentist in Richmond, mission bend family dentistry,

It is very necessary for children as well as infants between the ages of 6 to 16 years to be exposed to fluoride. The reason behind this is because this is the time range when the primary as well as the permanent teeth start coming out.

Adults also gain advantages from the use of fluoride. A recent research shows that topical fluoride from mouth rinsed to toothpastes are as important in fighting tooth decay as they are in strengthening or developing teeth.

However, other than this, people suffering from some conditions are at a higher risk of getting tooth decay. They could do well with exposure to fluoride. These are all the people with:

Dry Mouth Conditions

This is also referred to as xerostomia. Dry mouth is caused by diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, some medications like allergy medications, anti anxiety and anti histamine.  The lack of saliva produced leads to making it harder for food to be washed away.

Gum diseases

Also referred to as periodontists, this can expose more of your teeth and their roots to bacteria which increase the risk of decay. Gingivitis is simply an early stage of periodontists.

In the same way, if you have a history of suffering from cavities frequently, you will need more fluoride than what you are used to.

If you have crowns, bridges or braces attached then you are at slight risk of tooth decay too.

Are there Any Risks Involved?

Fluoride is always safe and effective for your teeth if you use it exactly as the dose that is recommended. You should avoid using this mineral in high doses, as that is where the ‘toxic’ level is labeled. Because of this very reason, it is very important that parents supervise their children from using products that contain high amounts of fluoride.

What happens with too much fluoride is that it causes defects in the enamel. These are the barely viewable white specks and streaks and even sometimes brown discoloration. Defects like these have a name: Flurorosis. When these occur, they are mostly related with natural fluoride which is found in well water. If you make use of well water and are unsure about  fluoride present in it, then get the water sample tested. You do not want strong abrasives to remove the fluoride in your teeth.

You should remember though that it is very difficult to reach hazardous levels of fluoride in any home based products. But even then if you are concerned, discuss this with your child dentist, family doctor, or pediatrician.

Some things You Should Remember about Fluoride at Home

  • Store these away from young children.
  • Avoid flavored toothpastes as these encourage toothpaste to be swallowed.
  • Only make use of pea size amounts of fluoridated toothpastes for children.
  • Always practice caution when it comes to using fluoride toothpaste for children who have not reached the age of six years yet.
