How to Brush and Floss With Braces

Braces take time to get used to. While the look and feel of braces might be a big change, your oral hygiene routine might also change. The extra hardware on your teeth might look like a hygiene challenge. However, it’s actually very easy to brush and floss around brackets and wires. Below, we will give you some tips so you can keep your teeth clean.

Do You Need to Brush Differently?

It’s important that you generally maintain your oral hygiene with braces. While brushing itself won’t change much, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, you should be brushing after your meals. Food can easily build up between your brackets and wires. You should also use a toothbrush with round bristles. Furthermore, you should consider a toothpaste and/or mouthwash with fluoride to prevent cavities.

How to Floss With Braces

Flossing is especially important if you have braces. This is because it cleans surfaces that your toothbrush cannot reach. Be sure to floss every day. Start by threading the floss in between the large wire that connects your brackets. This will prevent damage as you move the floss to clean between your teeth and around your brackets.

Protecting Wires From Damage

The wires and brackets on your teeth might feel strong, but they are surprisingly delicate. Be sure to avoid hard and sticky foods during your orthodontic treatment. Food can get stuck in between the wires or break the materials. You should also consider a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Tooth grinding can damage your brackets as well.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

While you will be seeing your orthodontist regularly, you should visit your dentist too. Your dentist will be able to remove plaque from the teeth, check for abnormalities, and professionally clean your mouth. This is important whether you have braces or not.
