You need to be able to recognize when there are changes in your mouth. These changes may be indicative of a more serious condition and the quicker you notice them, the quicker you can visit a dentist.
Bleeding gums
Bleeding gums may be a sign of gingivitis (gum disease). If not treated quickly, this may escalate to periodontitis (severe gum and tooth loss). Gingivitis is caused by plaque buildup from not brushing and flossing regularly.
Lumps on the gums
Lumps on the gums may be a sign of mouth infection, a local abscess or canker sores. Any of these require immediate attention. It may also be caused by oral cancer but this is rare. If you are pregnant and you notice lumps on your gums, you need not worry, it is most likely caused by hormones.
Lumps on the tongue
When you eat something hot or you bite down on your tongue, you may feel a painful lump begin to form. This painful lump may also be caused by stress or certain hormones. This is nothing to worry about, though, the condition will subside within a few days. It is probably your body’s way of telling you to slow down.
Mass at the back of the throat
Small chunks forming at the back of the throat may be tonsil stones, and it is prevalent in people who still have their tonsils. It may lead to bad breath but removing minor stones is often painless. Some may need surgery, however, but it’s important to have a dentist check it out quickly; before swallowing becomes difficult.
