What is the Procedure for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are sometimes necessary for overall good oral health, and when it comes to your well-being, you want to be as informed as possible. You also want the self-confidence that comes with a fantastic smile! As always, it is important to discuss your questions and concerns with your dentist, but you can start here to get the conversation flowing.

Consultation and Tooth Exam

The first and most important step is the consultation. Your health needs will be assessed, medical history discussed in detail and a treatment option will be formulated to fit your needs and lifestyle. Insurance and financing options will also be discussed at this time.

You will have a complete examination before the procedure, so the dentist can identify what needs to be done in order to achieve the results you seek. This includes digital imaging and evaluation of the bone density in the jaw. Impressions of your teeth are usually taken at this time.

Same-Day Dental Implants

There are a couple of ways to go.Your dentist will follow through with your personalized treatment option, which includes extraction of the teeth and placement of a small titanium post in the jawbone. Depending on your situation, you could leave there the same day with new teeth intact.

Traditional Dental Implants

There is also a more traditional option. This option calls for the titanium post to be seated for several weeks to give the surrounding bone and tissue time to heal. This period also allows the jawbone to form a biological bond to the post. You will have temporary teeth, so you will never be without your smile.

Once that implant is bonded and healed, a connector post is attached to hold the new tooth made from your impressions. Your new teeth will match your natural tooth color and should function and feel like natural teeth.

Maintenance

Maintenance primarily involves brushing and flossing. Keep up with your regular check-ups and cleanings. Your dental implants will look and act like natural teeth.

If you have had your teeth injured from an illness, injury or simple wear and tear, it is important to explore your dental implant options. Your teeth are valuable, not just for your health, but for your self-esteem and quality of life. You can regain that confidence and beautiful smile!
